More History to be Destroyed?

It was around 1890 that Andrew Mattei, an Italian immigrant by way of Switzerland,

founded his enterprise, planting vineyards near Malaga in southeast Fresno. For years Mattei’s name loomed large in the California wine industry and one of Alta Vineyards’s brands still carries his name.

Recently a bottle from Mattei’s day turned up locally, found on a holiday walk. Bottleresize 003The original tasting room and sales office of the Alta Vineyard was located downtown where today stands the Guarantee Savings Building (Originally named the Mattei building).

The Mattei building included a well and direct-current steam generators for electricity. The building is also said to have tunnels to the Andella Theater, now the Crest site, as well as the old Kinema Theater, Brix Building and the Fresno Hotel. With the potential of High-speed rail through the area who knows what more will be lost…..or found?
