Rockhound. OK, it’s a stretch.
As a little boy, when he and his buddies weren’t throwing rocks at each other in ‘Old Fig’, John Eliason was picking them up and putting them in his pockets to take home. After amassing one of the largest amethyst and petrified wood collections on the West Coast along with an extensive array of other minerals and fossils from around the world, John and his son Ethan opened Foxtail Gallery in Clovis.
Specializing in minerals, they carry high-grade specimens for the truly serious collector. Foxtail Gallery also works directly with interior designers and architects as well. “The wonderful thing about minerals is that they go with any décor” explains Ethan. “We specialize in minerals and fossils from around the world.”
These collectors are a hardy bunch who love to explore the geologic landscape in search of treasures from the earth’s crust. “All you need to get started is a strong pair of legs,” says Bobby Cook, member of the Fresno Gem and Mineral Society. It’s this thrill of discovery that keeps rockhounds on the trail for interesting specimens.
