Rising from the rubble of the great San Francisco earthquake The Bank of Italy became Bank of America and further developed Giannini’s idea of a regional bank system. The Fresno branch holds an interesting place in American finance history. In the 50’s B of A initiated a pilot program freely issuing special cards to our residents. It was the first general purpose credit card by a large American bank and Fresno was the nation’s test market for this new concept of using a plastic card to pay for purchases.
Today we know it as VISA and it all started here, downtown on the Fulton Mall. Open your purse or wallet and tell me what you see… how many cards do you have?
