The pivotal center of the District, the Tower Theatre opened in 1939 as a 20th Century Fox Movie House and was restored in 1990 reopening as a center for the performing arts, soon after it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Considered to be the finest facility of its kind in California, the Tower Theatre boasts an authentic art deco theme throughout. A beautiful art deco foyer with its etched glass panels and the rich wood veneers beautify light the foyer. Titled the Huntsman it is nearly identical to the 1927 sculpture by Cecere; authentication has been elusive however.
As the city’s first suburban theater the Tower Theater became the dominant landmark anchoring a collection of shops and developing into the hip area we know today. With the glory days of the past behind it, the Tower Theatre now functions again as a community meeting place for performing arts and lectures. Summer film festivals have been proposed while currently Spanish films are shown on Sundays. If were lucky we’ll get an inside behind-the-scenes tour this weekend….
